Hong Kong Air Quality Review

According to the “Hong Kong Clean Air Plan 2035″* published by the Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong, in the last 10 years from 2010~2020, we saw overall air pollution level dropping from the severe level in the past to improved level at present, however the concentration of harmful substances are still high including aerosol particulate, ultra-fine particle, NO2; while ozone is affected by photo/chemical environmental factor and climbing up in certain district/area.

Let's take a look at what harmful substances in polluted air are jeopardizing our health

Carbon Monoxide (CO) —— it will lower the O2 circulation level in red blood cell;
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) —— cause irritation to eyes, nose, throat and respiratory membrane, long term exposure can cause weakening in lung functions;
Ozone (O3) —— cause irritation to eyes and creates respiratory problem;
Particulate Matter (PM10/PM2.5) —— When PM2.5 or even finer particular goes deep to the lung, it will affect our respiratory system, lung, cardio-vascular and brain function.  PM2.5 has been classified as Class 1 cancer causing substance;
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) —— cause irritation to eyes and nose, we see more obvious symptom in asthma and respiratory disease patients;
Lead — toxic, damage our nerve, kidney; it has neurological effects in children.  Infants and young children are especially sensitive to lead exposures, which may contribute to behavioral problems, learning deficits and lowered IQ.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) near 7 million premature death is related to Air Pollution
